PHP is an open source, server-side scripting language that was created specifically for Web development. PHP can be embedded directly into an HTML page. A recursive acronym for “PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor,” PHP originally stood for “Personal Home Page.” It is used mainly for developing server-side applications and dynamic web content, and recently, many Web 2.0-style software applications.
PHP interacts with a large number of databases, with MySQL, also open source, being its “match-made-in-heaven.” PHP runs on just about every major operating system, including Unix, Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. All of this makes it an extremely flexible and portable solution for a variety of Web applications.
